New Africa Private 'Stewardry?'

A
WTO representative recently announced an initiative for "full private
stewardry of labor" for the parts of Africa that have been hardest hit
by the 500 years of Africa's free trade with the West. Some say that
private stewardship has already been successfully applied to transport,
power, water, traditional knowledge, and even the human genome. Will
'private stewardry' really help the poor or is it just another name for
slavery? We'll examine and discuss this controversial issue.

Afghanistan
continues to struggle to rebuild its infrastructure for several
reasons, including corruption. The Taliban insurgency, opium production
is back on the rise and new reports cite inadequate police training
have also hindered this nation’s efforts to rebuild. We’ll discuss
Afghanistan’s difficulties as well as continued efforts to help it
recover from years of conflict.

Bird Flu Update

The
World Bank says the global fight against bird flu needs at least $1.2
billion in extra funding over the next few years. The H5N1 virus has
killed more than 140 people since 2003 and forced the culling of about
250 million poultry birds. The virus first struck Asian poultry, but
has since been identified in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Today
we’ll examine and discuss the latest news on the Bird Flu.
